Meet Alex
I'm Alex, an athlete and coach based in Cambridge. I train and compete myself, and everything I do here is built on that experience combined with actual exercise science and methodology, not just theory. Here's a bit about how I got here, what I've studied, and how I work with the athletes I coach.
Rowing is where I've competed most seriously. After getting properly back into it, the last two seasons have been my main return to competition, I medalled at NZ Nationals in 2025/26, and narrowly missied out on the final at the NZ Beach Sprints Championships, posting some of the fastest times of the day in my quarterfinal. I'm currently building back into training ahead of the next season with many endurance challenges and more ahead.
Why I coach?
My approach to coaching has grown from my own experience as an athlete pushing for improvements in endurance, rowing, strength and surfing. I know firsthand the ups and downs of trying to progress, facing setbacks and learning what really makes a difference in performance. This journey led me to dig deeper into the science of athletic development, to understand not just what to do, but why it works.
For me, coaching is much more than writing a training plan, it's about understanding who the athlete is, what drives them and what they need to reach their goals. I start each coaching relationship by getting to know the person, their sport, strengths, training background and what fits with their lifestyle. From there, I create a training approach that is unique to them, making sure every session supports their real needs.
Over the years, I've learnt that effective coaching is ongoing, I monitor progress, adjust plans and keep communicating honestly, helping athletes build lasting performance, not quick fixes.
My Qualifications
NZ Certificate in Exercise — Level 5
NZ Certificate in Exercise — Level 4
My background in performance coaching comes from both sides of the process, as an athlete and as a Coach/Trainer.
Sport has been a major part of my life, being involved from such a young age, growing up trying out and experiencing different sports and activities made me an adaptable athlete across the board. With experience across rowing, endurance training, strength and conditioning, running, triathlon, cycling and surfing. Training and competing across different disciplines has given me first-hand experience of the demands that athletes face, from building physical capacity and managing training load to preparing for competition and continuing to improve when progress isn't always straightforward.
Alongside my own sporting experience and ventures, I have completed both the New Zealand Certificate in Exercise — Level 4 and New Zealand Certificate in Exercise — Level 5. My studies have covered areas including anatomy and physiology, exercise prescription, exercise science, nutrition, special populations, programme design and professional practice.
I'm continuing to develop as both an athlete and a coach, constantly learning from my own training, other athletes, research and experience. I don't believe coaching is something you ever finish learning, the better I understand performance, the better I can support the athletes I work with.
My Approach
I believe great coaching starts with curiosity.
Ask better questions. Understand the athlete. Identify what is limiting performance. Then build the process around it.
TRAIN WITH PURPOSE. BUILD CAPABILITY. PERFORM BETTER.
